Agency Route vs. Adoption Consultant Route: How to Choose the Best Path for Your Family

When you are beginning the adoption process, one of the first questions you may ask is, “Should we sign with an adoption agency or work with an adoption consultant?”

It is a really important question, and honestly, it is one I wish more families asked before they started spending money in the adoption process. Many families assume that signing with an adoption agency is simply the next step. And for some families, working directly with one agency may be the right fit. But it is important to understand that signing with one agency and working with an adoption consultant are not the same thing. It is also important to understand that not all adoption agencies operate the same way.

Some agencies are ethical, active, experienced, and provide excellent care to expecting mothers and adoptive families. Others may not operate with the same level of transparency, communication, or support, or they may simply not be the best fit for your family’s preferences, budget, timeline, or overall adoption goals. Some may have long waitlists. Some may have fewer placement opportunities. Some may have fees that are due early in the process. Some may look promising on the front end, but may not be the right fit once you understand more about how they operate. This is where many families get overwhelmed. Because the agency route may sound like the simpler route, but that is not always the case.

Understanding the difference between working with one agency and working with an adoption consultant can help you make a more informed decision as you move forward.

What happens when you sign with one adoption agency?

When you sign with one adoption agency, you are typically entering that agency’s specific program. That means you are working within their process, their waitlist, their available situations, their fees, and their placement opportunities. That may be a great fit if the agency is ethical, active, transparent, and aligned with your family’s adoption preferences. But it can also be hard for families to know that on the front end.

Many families do not yet know what to look for, what questions to ask, or how to compare one agency to another. They may not know whether a wait time is realistic, whether the fees make sense, whether the agency is active, or whether the agency is truly a good fit for their family’s preferences. And the truth is, there are actually many adoption agencies we would not recommend families work with.

What does an adoption consultant do differently?

At Christian Adoption Consultants, we are not here to replace adoption agencies. Families still need agencies and attorneys to complete the legal and placement side of the adoption process. But our role is different. We help families understand the adoption process, prepare well, and apply with multiple vetted agencies and attorneys that align with their home study, budget, openness, and adoption preferences. Instead of being limited to one agency’s waitlist, CAC families are able to work with multiple agencies that have gone through our vetting process. That can make a significant difference. It gives families more opportunities to be considered, more guidance as they evaluate agencies and situations, and more support as they make decisions throughout the process.

Our Vetting Process Matters

One of the biggest benefits of working with CAC is that we have already done so much of the research families are trying to do on their own. Our vetting process is thorough and intentional. We look beyond what is listed on a website or shared in an introductory call. We are paying attention to the bigger picture of how agencies operate, how they communicate, how they support expecting mothers, how they handle risk, whether they are a good fit for the families we serve, and a lot of other facotrs.

And this process is not based on guesswork. CAC families are being connected with agencies that have been reviewed by experienced adoption professionals, including licensed social workers and a former adoption agency director. These are professionals who know what to look for, what questions matter, what concerns should not be ignored, and what can impact a family’s experience long term.

A Consultant Route Can Provide More Opportunities

One of the reasons many families choose to work with CAC is because they do not want to sit on one agency’s waitlist and hope the right situation eventually comes. When families apply with multiple vetted agencies, they are creating more opportunities to be seen and considered by agencies that may be a good fit for their family. Adoption is still deeply personal, and every family’s timeline will look different. But having a broader, more strategic approach can often help families experience shorter wait times than they might with a single agency route. Our average wait time for a match after a family’s home study is complete is 7–12 months, compared to the 2–3 year wait many families are told to expect when working through a single agency.

A Consultant Route May Help Lower Your Risk

Adoption always involves some level of risk. There is no such thing as a risk-free adoption, and any family pursuing adoption should understand that. But families should not have to evaluate those risks alone. At CAC, we walk with families when adoption situations come in. We help them slow down, look at the details, and understand the bigger picture before they decide whether to present. These decisions can feel very emotional in the moment, especially when a family has been waiting and praying for a child. Having someone walk with you, advocate for you, and help you ask the right questions can make a really big difference.

Because of the nature of our vetting process, education, and ongoing support, our families are often stepping into adoption situations with a much lower risk of their adoption not moving forward than they might experience navigating the process on their own. To give you an idea, the national adoption failure rate is often cited around 50–60%, meaning many matches do not ultimately result in placement. For CAC families, that rate is significantly lower, around 19%. While no one can remove all risk from adoption, our goal is to help families make wise, informed decisions by carefully evaluating agencies and situations before they move forward.

Our Experienced Team Is Part Of The Value

Christian Adoption Consultants has been walking with families through adoption since 2006, and we have helped over 4,350 families adopt. Our team brings years of experience in adoption and includes adoptive parents, adoptees, licensed social workers, a licensed professional counselor, an adoption agency director, and professionals who have walked thousands of families through the adoption process. This is not just something we talk about from a distance. We have lived it, studied it, and walked with families through the real emotions and decisions that come with adoption. Because we have walked with thousands of families through this process, we understand the weight of these decisions and the importance of moving forward with wisdom, ethics, compassion, and care for everyone involved.

Dedicated Support for Hopeful Adoptive Families

Another benefit of working with an adoption consultant is having support that is specifically focused on you as the hopeful adoptive family. Agencies play an important and necessary role in the adoption process. They are often caring for expecting mothers, supporting birth mothers, working with hopeful adoptive families, coordinating with social workers, and communicating with legal teams. Because of the nature of their role, their time and attention are naturally divided between many people and responsibilities.

At CAC, our role is different. All of our time, energy and resources are being poured into educating, guiding, and advocating for hopeful adoptive families. We help families understand their options, evaluate situations, think through important decisions, and move forward with more clarity and confidence. And as a Christian organization, we are honored to provide faith-based support for families who want someone to pray with them, encourage them, and remind them of truth as they walk through the unknowns of adoption.

So… How Do You Choose?

If you are trying to decide between signing with one agency or working with an adoption consultant, here are some questions to ask yourself:

Do we want to be limited to one agency’s process and waitlist, or would we benefit from access to multiple vetted agencies?
Do we feel confident evaluating agencies, fees, risk, and adoption situations on our own?
Do we know how to determine which agencies are ethical, active, and a good fit for our family?
Do we want someone advocating specifically for us throughout the process?
Do we want education, guidance, and support from an experienced team?
Do we want help lowering unnecessary risk where we can?
Are we comfortable with a potentially longer wait time, or would we benefit from a more strategic, multi-agency approach?
Are we looking for faith-based support as we walk through the emotional and spiritual weight of adoption?

There is not one right answer for every family. Some families may feel confident moving forward with one agency. Others may want more guidance, more options, and more support as they navigate the process. But before you sign with an agency and assume that is your only path forward, I would encourage you to look at the bigger picture. Adoption is too important to enter blindly. The agency you choose, the situations you consider, the support you have, and the guidance you receive can all shape your experience.

At CAC, our heart is to help families walk through the adoption process with wisdom, clarity, advocacy, and support. Because adoption is emotional, expensive, and full of unknowns. And you should not have to navigate it alone.
